Finding my Footing

I left this site sit for some time and tried a generalized blog, the in the end I wanted something more... Something more like a website with a portfolio. So I came back to this site and decided to update it. I think though I am limited on space, I have made the most of it thus far. I am very pleased with the looks. As my business grows I will purchase more options, but for now, this is it.

I have been debating a URL change. My domain is up for renewal in July and I feel like I should really move to a (dot)com address. I am also thinking about changing the name to match my Facebook.  It would sure make it easier for some to remember.

I am working on specializing mainly in Newborn Portraits. I have added some newborn images to my portfolio here, and I think maybe newborns are my niche. I was so worried about my first time photographing a newborn. I stressed so badly I was watching YouTube Videos, and watching the newborn part of the first installment of this year's photovision. Everything seemed to make it out much harder than it really was. A nice slow approach and it all just fell into place so well. I was surprised myself how easily things came to me. The stress of a perfect pose was gone. Fold the baby up, and take several pictures. You do not have to worry about eyes being open enough, or squinting slightly. Or the perfect not cheesy smile. When I was looking through my film (digital images) I was shocked with my results. I had to remind myself that they were MY WORK.  I really loved the nice relaxed pace of the session, and cannot wait to do my next.

I have picked up two antique crate props. One was actually made into a wagon and the other is just a crate. I LOVE them. I cannot wait for this summer of Flea Markets and I can pick up more...

Right now I am not sure what I should worry most about. Marketing myself, or working on building my props. I want to invest in a polyvynal floor drop from Lemondrop. But if I get my name out there and book some more clients, I can invest in the more expensive products easier. So I am thinking of getting my name in the newspaper and ordering up some business cards... But then again I need to decide on if I am changing my domain name before I invest in something that will become obsolete in 2 months.

I am proud of myself for making it this far as of yet. I am really so happy when I am holding my camera. And I know if I keep at it, I can only go up... I shall leave you with a little quote I find inspiration.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you'll land among the stars.

Joining The Ranks of Facebook

A few weeks ago I decided to create a Facebook Page for my photography. I have recently decided I want to try to make a living at this. I love having a camera in my hand, and I hope with every project I improve. If you think I have potential, or if you just like “liking” FB pages, come and “like” me. I want to get my name out there locally, but still want to share my work with everybody. I decided to add myself to Facebook because it is a way of getting my name out there locally as more people “like” my page. But I don’t want to limit to sharing my work and journey with just a small geographical location. I want to be able to show how I am growing, and my dive into Professional Photography is coming along for me. I want to grow and find new horizons.

Professional Photography is all very new to me, and its a very competitive field to work, so I could use all the encouragement possible. So come “like” me and give me a boost of confidence.

Introducing Julie

1. I think the first question should be: Why do you take pictures? I started photography quite randomly… I used to take useless pictures, only because I found them aesthetic ; at the same time (about three years ago), I was discovering amazing artists on DeviantART. I thus decided to keep on practicing photography, to become as good as these photographers. Or at least to become better, to be proud of my work. Now I take pictures because I really enjoy the fact that I can create a whole picture, that an image I had in mind can become real and printed on paper. I really love to create my own stories and fairy tales, and above all, I love sharing them!

2. Do you have a photograph that you look back on and say, “wow”? (please provide link as well) I have so many pictures that I love… I’ve chosen a picture made by Rosie Hardy, because she is really the one who gave me the desire to begin photography, and because I still love the pictures of her gallery that amazed me three years ago : link

3. From your deviantArt gallery, my personal favorite piece is The Dancer’s Despairlink Did you have any special inspiration or story behind this piece, or was it one of those random days?* It really was one of those random days… at the time I was under the impression that I had lost my inspiration ; I was trying and trying again to take a good picture, and I couldn’t. All I was doing was bad to me. And I saw the ribbons. I had no idea of what I wanted to do, but I placed my camera on my tripod, jumped on the bed and took the picture. I found its meaning later on… and now it is one of my favorite pictures, so I’m really glad you like it !

4. What genre of photography would you best classify your own works? I think my works can be classified under the “conceptual” and “surrealist” genres. I definitely aim at doing what is called “fine art photography” or “artistic photography” ; on the contrary I’m not very interested in fashion photography…

5. If you could photograph any one person in the world, or from history, who would you choose, and why? Good question ! Right now I want to shoot Louise Ebel, she’s so inspiring. And guess what! She has accepted to be my model soon! link

6. On your personal website, you refer to yourself as an amateur photographer. Have you not yet taken payment for your work, or do you refer to yourself as amateur because you feel you have not crossed that line into a description of just photographer or professional photographer? I refer to myself as amateur only because in France, to be a professional you need to declare it to the State, so that the payments you receive are legal… I am considering declaring myself as a professional, though I’m not sure I am good enough for it !

7. You clearly put a lot of thought into your work, the concepts and even basic prop placement. How long do you spend on an average project? It really depends ; I elaborate my concepts quite quickly -it is as if they came by themselves to my mind ; then I have to set the shooting place, and finally to edit the pictures, and these two steps can take a long time. So Overall, I think an average project takes me five hours.

8. How do you feel about the over- use of Photoshop? Do you feel many photographers are starting to rely on it as a crutch, or is it just a tool of the trade? I think it depends on the conception of photography that the photographers defend. For example, in my pictures I really aim at creating a new world, I don’t want to duplicate the real world. Consequently my Photoshop editions are part and parcel of my work, I don’t mind if one of my pictures looks over-edited (though I try to be quite reasonable) But some photographers want to create realistic shots, and in this case, I think these photographers should not rely on the edition to make “good” pictures. But that’s just my opinion!

9. Congratulations on winning the Upside Down Contest in The Photographer’s Place on deviantArt. *"link":http://duchesse-2-guermante.deviantart.com/art/Reality-won-t-let-me-dream-175164977 I noticed that you actually had another piece that could have been entered and would have fit the contest rules perfectly. link How did decide upon which piece to enter?* Thank you again ! I indeed hesitated between these two shots… but I choose the one I submitted to the contest because I think that its signification is more interesting…

10. Lastly, what is the first word that comes to mind when I say “rain drops”? “Window” !

I enjoyed getting the chance to interview Miss Julie, and her answers were beautifully written despite English not being her native language. She has a strong passion for her work, and though it may not be the normal perfect airbrushed portrait some are looking for, her work has beauty, emotion, and a story that could be written for each one.

Clay County Photography Exhibit Results

I am glad that I entered the fair this year. It was the last year to enter, but my placings helped give me a boost of self confidence in my work. It would be nice if I could come back next year and work on improving my scores, but instead it will have to be a personal judgment. I’ve been asked to do Senior Portraits for an older sibling of one of Michael’s girlfriends. Once I take payment for my first photograph I am no longer considered a Hobby Photographer. It will feel good to call myself a professional photographer.

I entered 5 pieces this year in the following categories: People Color, People Black and White, Animals and Insects Color, Plants Color, and Computer Manipulation. Two were shot on a basic point and shoot Fuji Film Finepix Z30 compact camera. Those pieces are not featured in the gallery here on hollyelizabethjean.us but links can be found on the About Me Page under Awards, or on the Awards section on the Clay County Fair Project. The other three are featured here in my gallery in Children and Nature folders and were shot with a DSLR Nikon d5000.Of those shot with a compact camera; one was a picture in black and white of my son in a suit, turning away from me on an old wooden bridge known as Thunder Bridge. It received a Second Place Ribbon. The other is a computer manipulated or “photoshopped” picture of a water drop on a dream catcher feather. It also received a Second Place Ribbon.

Those photographed using the dslr camera, the first was of my son against a brick wall. This picture received an Honorable Mention or Best of Class award. The next picture that received a Second Place Ribbon was the yellow flowers similar to Black Eyed Susans. The picture that ranked the lowest with a Third Place Ribbon was a photograph of a bee on purple flowers. My portfolio currently has two bees, the one entered is the photograph in landscape or horizontal orientation.

I was pleased with my rankings. I did find myself disagreeing with some of the placings on other photographs. I found some that won First Place Ribbons were no better than simple and unfocused snapshots. And some that placed Second and Third were much better. The Animal and Insects category was most true in this less than fair judging. I did see some pieces that blew me away and I could not understand why they placed so low. The composition and quality were outstanding. And then there were pictures that were fine for family albums, but not really exhibit worthy. But it was great that so many wonderful and still learning photographers entered and tried their best. The Youth Division of the Photography Exhibit was also an outstanding display of photography. Some of the photographs taken by young children blew the adult entries out of the water.

In the end, I am satisfied with this year and finally entering after so many years of not. I have no regrets and have come out of this feeling better. In a week I will get my pictures back and will be able to read the judges’ comments and know where I need to improve on my work.

Quotations from Great Minds

“There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are.” Ernst Haas

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.” Aaron Siskind

“Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world.” Arnold Newman

“A photograph is a portrait painted by the sun”

“Photography is truth.” Jean-Luc Godard

World's Greatest County Fair

I have wanted to enter the Photography Exhibit at the Clay County Fair for several years now. I admit when I first heard they were adding Photography to the fair, I was tickled beyond pink. But I always found reasons not to enter. I didn’t have the right picture, or the right camera. Or the time to prepare. Or I just thought I was not good enough. Now this upcoming fair is the last fair I can enter with good conscious. Once I take payment for my first portrait I will be considered a professional photographer. As of now I am just a very obsessed person with a camera and dreams of someday making it big. Well, perhaps not big, but hopefully I will find enough success in my work to pay my bills.

I admit last year I was really kicking myself in the bum for not trying harder to go out and get those perfect shots. I went through the exhibit and for the first time since the Photography Department was opened, I was not blown away by the pieces featured. I had to scratch my head and wonder why some of the photographs placed so highly. I do tend to disagree with the judging, I often find a piece that I feel should have gotten a blue ribbon. This year I have fought a little with myself about entering, thinking I did not have enough time, or the options available to enter. But with it being my last year, I know I will always regret if I do not at least enter a few pieces. I may not enter in every category, but at least I will be trying rather than running scared.

Even if none of my photographs place, I think it will be a rush just seeing them displayed. I hope I get a few ribbons though. I will admit I will be disappointed to walk away with nothing. It could be a big blow to my confidence. But if there is some strong competition this year, I will at least see where I need to be and can work on improving myself.

This year the fair runs from September 11-19th.

I hope many people can stop by the fair and see my work. CCF is a huge fair, with so many different things to see. Think of us as a decent county fair on steroids. I imagine we can compete with many state fairs. The Photography Exhibit is located near the Arts on Grand Barn south of the Outdoor Horse Arena and new Livestock Complex. Do not just stop by to see my work, be sure to take in all the wonderful photographs there. Besides my name will not be posted on my photographs, so you may have to guess which pieces are mine in each category.

And be sure to check out the fair’s website! Clay County Fair

Launching New Website

After searching for an adequate website host, I have settled for Mixform, and created this site to showcase my portfolio as I gain experience in photography. The site does come with limitations, but I feel it has a more professional feel than the photo blog platform I was using. Hopefully this site serves as a much better host, with fewer spells of downtime that I was experiencing with the other site.
